Logiera’s inland harbor operations are part of its concept of intermodal corridors. The basic idea of the inland harbor is to combine individual streams of transportation into large volumes and focus them into few main harbors in order to achieve scale advantages and improved efficiency. The operations are based on utilizing existing infrastructure, and their goal is to improve the freight transport from harbors. Since the operations use existing railways and roads, no massive, expensive and long-term investments are needed.

The concept also includes the management, maintenance and storage of containers (container depot), that guarantees the cost-effective availability of containers. One of the goals is to reduce the transportation of empty containers, so that the number of containers to and from Finland is balanced.

The market of the inland harbor consists of three segments: overseas transportations, transportations within Europe and transportations of parceled goods within Finland. These are then fused into the city logistics. The transportations support one another and are linked into an international chain of transportation.

There is a large demand for inland harbors. One growing customer group is in commerce; when the operations into inland become more efficient, the amount of goods coming into Finland in containers will grow accordingly. This will also improve container balance. Other large customer groups are the forest industry and the parceled goods industry. Logiera will build an efficient system that helps improve the competitiveness of Finnish industry and commerce.

Logiera has launched a study concerning inland harbors, which evaluates customer potential and maps possible partners. In addition, Logiera is examining different alternatives for the location of the inland harbors within the framework of the existing traffic network. Most likely, the operation will start in small scale in a location, from which there already is access to the existing railway network and a reasonable road access. The goal is to launch the small-scale operation by the end of 2011. Already, Logiera has the support of the leading harbor operators for the project.
